Book excerpt: In A Necessary Evil, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Garry Wills shows that distrust of government is embedded deep in the American psyche. From the revolt of the colonies against king and parliament to present-day tax revolts, militia movements, and debates about term limits, Wills shows that American antigovernment sentiment is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of our history. By debunking some of our fondest myths about the Founding Fathers, the Constitution, and the taming of the frontier, Wills shows us how our tendency to hold our elected government in disdain is misguided.

The author first examines Oakeshott in the contexts of liberal, conservative and Idealist thought, and then presents a detailed interpretation of the change in his conception of politics in the context of British postwar political thought. It is argued that Oakeshott's conception of political activity shifted from a near contempt of politics towards the applauding of politics as a deliberative and reflective activity. The development is disclosed by examining the change in his key concepts, such as authority and tradition. Accordingly, some rather unexpected aspects of Oakeshott's thought, such as his close relationship to the linguistic turn, appear. The author argues that although Oakeshott cannot exactly be classified as belonging to that group of political philosophers for whom politics represents a superior human activity, his later work presents an important and original view of politics as an art of contingency.

Book excerpt: "This book explores the underlying rationales for preventive detention as a tool in this war on terror; analyzes the legal obstacles to creating a preventive detention regime; discusses how Israel and Britain have dealt with incapacitation and interrogation of terrorists; and compares several alternative ideas to the administration's enemy combatant policy under a methodology that looks at questions of lawfulness, the balance between liberty and security, and institutional efficiency. In the end, this book recommends using the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to monitor a narrow regime of preventive detention only to be used under certain prescribed circumstances where interrogation and/or incapacitation are the justifications. This book is an essential reference for collections in American studies, political science, and national security studies."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Long couched only in theological terms, and popularly personified by the despots of history, the nature of evil has resisted explanation. In this singular survey of this mysterious but all too often palpable force, veteran Time magazine writer Lance Morrow examines the unmistakable ways evil influences our global culture-and how that global culture in turn has magnified evil's menace. Its dramatic reemergence in the national consciousness-against a backdrop of high-tech, sensationalized violence-makes his updated understanding both timely and absolutely necessary. Drawing on examples both obscure and splashed across the headlines, Morrow seeks to understand how evil works, and what purpose, if any, it serves. From the heartrending to the harrowing, from quiet lies to catastrophic acts, his stories are drawn from over thirty years of experience as a revered journalist and essayist. The result is a brilliant synthesis of a lifetime of observation that elegantly illuminates a chronically elusive but fascinating subject.

Book excerpt: Finance governs almost every aspect of modern life. Every day, we use the financial system to mortgage our homes, to insure our health, to invest in our futures through education and pension funds, to feed and clothe ourselves, to be paid for our labor, and to help others in need. As the fuelof capitalism, finance has been a major force for human progress for centuries. Yet it has periodically generated disasters too, from the Great Depression to the recent sub-prime mortgage crisis. In writing Necessary Evil, eminent human rights law scholar David Kinley spent ten years immersed in researching finance's many facets - from how it is raised and what it is spent on, to when it is gambled and who wins and who loses - to produce this unique account of how finance works from a humanrights perspective. He argues that while finance has historically facilitated many beneficial trends in human well-being, a sea change has occurred in the past quarter century. Since the end of the Cold War, the finance sector's power has grown by leaps and bounds, to the point where it is now outof control. Oversight of the sector has been weakened by deregulation, as powerful lobbyists have persuaded our leaders that what is good for finance is good for the economy as a whole. Kinley shows how finance has become society's master rather than its servant, and how, as a consequence, humanrights concerns are so often ignored, sidelined or crushed. Using episodes of financial malfeasance from around the globe - from the world's banking capitals to the mines of central Africa and the factories of East Asia - Kinley illustrates how the tools of international finance time and time againfail to advance the human condition. Kinley also suggests policies that can help finance protect and promote human rights and thereby regain the public trust and credibility it has so spectacularly lost over the past decade. An authoritative account of the extraordinary social consequences of the financial system at the heart of the world's economy, Necessary Evil will be an essential tool for anyone committed to making global capitalism a fairer and more effective vehicle for improving the lives of many, and not justproviding for the comfort of a few.

Book excerpt: In this steamy series opener from bestselling author Jamie K. Schmidt—whose writing has been called “hot and sexy, with just the right amount of emotional punch,” by Lauren Layne—a vigilante biker takes the power of love into his own hands. Lucy Simmons comes from a rough family, but she’s a damn good public defender. Even though she hates to see criminals walk due to sloppy police work, the law’s there to make sure everyone gets a fair trial, and Lucy certainly doesn’t believe in the kind of justice meted out by the leather-clad ex-cop they call “Evil.” He’s stubborn, cynical, and out of control—but he plays her body like no man ever has. For once, both Lucy’s boss and her brother agree: The biker is trouble. Evan Villiers took a sacred vow to let no killer, rapist, or pedophile go unpunished. When scumbags fall through the system, the Sentinels of Babylon clean up the garbage. Although the SOBs and their methods may not be to Lucy’s liking, the beautiful lawyer has become Evan’s light in the dark. But his next hit is Lucy’s own brother—a murderer who got off on a technicality. Now, with his loyalties split, Evan must turn his back on his sworn duties . . . or lose the woman who has claimed his reckless heart. Praise for Necessary Evil “Calling all fans of Sons of Anarchy (and, of course, Jax)! This book is for you. Jamie K. Schmidt delivers a turbo-paced, gritty, highly sexual thrill ride with this first book in her new series.”—Jamie Beck, bestselling author of the Sterling Canyon and St. James series “Jamie K. Schmidt’s Necessary Evil is the perfect alpha-male-MC-bad-boy-meets-vigilante-law-enforcement romance with characters that pull at your heartstrings and make you fall in love with every page.”—Sarah Robinson, author of Breaking a Legend “I would recommend Necessary Evil by Jamie K. Schmidt, if you enjoy romantic suspense or the enemy-to-lovers trope.”—Harlequin Junkie “Really enjoyed this book. I loved Evan.”—A Crazy Vermonter’s Book Reviews “You should read this book because it is an emotional roller-coaster ride of action and great tension.”—Blue Cat Reviews “I loved this book. It had all the elements of Dark Justice just with a different spin. It was nice to reminisce while enjoying a fantastic book. Necessary Evil had a great plot and a well developed set of characters.”—Yearwood La Novela “This is a nice read if you’re looking for something seductive and entertaining, with a nice amount of thrills.”—Books Movies Fandoms “This was a good start for the Sentinels of Babylon series. I look forward to seeing the subplots that were present in this story in their own books.”—Once Upon an Alpha “The mystery in the Necessary Evil was complex and gut-wrenching creating it a good read.”—Janet Reads Books “The chemistry was fierce and protective. The pacing was fast and exciting. . . . I look forward to reading the rest of this series.”—Alpha Book Club Includes an excerpt from another Loveswept title.
