Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered how it would look to live out a Christian sexual ethic amid the varied and confusing sexual messages that are part of modern culture? Does the Christian tradition provide us with a way to think about and act on our natural, God-given sexual desires? Honoring God with Body and Mind invites readers to consider these questions—and some ways of answering them—by guiding them into a conversational style of moral reflection. Unlike many books about Christians and sex, this one doesn’t simply tell you what to do (or not to do). Instead, you will be led to think about how the meaning of sex can provide sexual boundaries, but also how the relational dimension of sex and the virtue of sexual integrity can provide a context for sexual decision-making. Informed by many years of conversations with college students, the author also invites you to think about practical questions such as these: Can men and women be friends without the complications of sexual attraction? If I haven’t always included Christian values in my sexual practices and carry some painful memories and regrets, is there any hope of healing? What is lust? Is masturbation sinful? Can virginity be reclaimed?

Book excerpt: This devotional is the product of a deep-seated desire to place in the hands of readers a unique material that meets the needs of youths, middle-aged and the elderly. This book meets your needs today, is entirely practical just as it is entirely scriptural. In terms of arrangement, it starts by reminding the reader of the Lord’s Prayer. Unlike most devotionals, it has table of contents that tells the reader the topics, dates and pages where the subjects are treated for the entire year; the reader can go to a topic of interest and read it before or after the date. Moreover, there is no assigned year, making it valid any year. You can purchase it on any day of the year, start using it and get back to that date the following year. Topics are taken from Genesis to Revelation. Bible passages averagely stay within fifteen verses, with depth of contents even when just one verse is studied. The icing on the cake consists of four feature articles and ten word-search puzzles. The titles of the feature articles include: The Youth: The Errors of Rachel; Trust; and Challenges and Fulfilment of The Elderly. They cover interesting areas on youths, women, children and the elderly, respectively. The ten puzzles are for your exercise. Even readers completely unfamiliar with the Bible are welcome as the this ‘study-devotional’ meets everyone’s heartfelt needs.

Data was collected via an online questionnaire and the study design mixed methods with an emphasis on the qualitative data. The study sample included eighty students/alumni from thirty-two Christian colleges/universities. Generally, respondents felt lonely, hid their sexuality, and reported a negative campus climate. Recommendations from respondents include: institutional policies must be clearer and applied consistently, improve campus climate, and form support groups for LGB and SSA students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven Wasserstrom undertakes a detailed analysis of the "creative symbiosis" that existed between Jewish and Muslim religious thought in the eighth through tenth centuries. Wasserstrom brings the disciplinary approaches of religious studies to bear on questions that have been examined previously by historians and by specialists in Judaism and Islam. His thematic approach provides an example of how difficult questions of influence might be opened up for broader examination. In Part I, "Trajectories," the author explores early Jewish-Muslim interactions, studying such areas as messianism, professions, authority, and class structure and showing how they were reshaped during the first centuries of Islam. Part II, "Constructions," looks at influences of Judaism on the development of the emerging Shi'ite community. This is tied to the wider issue of how early Muslims conceptualized "the Jew." In Part III, "Intimacies," the author tackles the complex "esoteric symbiosis" between Muslim and Jewish theologies. An investigation of the milieu in which Jews and Muslims interacted sheds new light on their shared religious imaginings. Throughout, Wasserstrom expands on the work of social and political historians to include symbolic and conceptual aspects of interreligious symbiosis. This book will interest scholars of Judaism and Islam, as well as those who are attracted by the larger issues exposed by its methodology. Originally published in 1995. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. The critical question is, how do we find strength to put broken things back together again? This book is an invitation to touch the scars that mark the broken places in our lives, in the same way the risen Christ invited a doubting disciple to touch the nail scars in his hands. It is a challenge to explore some of the dark places in our human experience, to uncover the sinister power of sin, and to experience the way the grace of God meets us in our broken places to bring new life.”

Book excerpt: Biblical Guidance for Ministering God’s Love in a Sexually Diverse Culture In a time when sexual norms are changing rapidly, how can a local church be a place of grace—a loving community for all kinds of people—where everyone can flourish and disagreements are overcome in a Christlike spirit while at the same time stay true to biblical standards? In a way that appeals to pastors and lay leaders alike, Bruce offers a biblical theology of sexuality and provides practical wisdom for how a church can approach ministering to, and alongside, people who identify their sexuality in diverse ways: LGBTQ+. Here is a church-tested program full of wise pastoral insights to help church leaders think through day-to-day decisions, such as how to handle baby dedications, small groups, who can serve, membership, baptism, retreats, the Lord’s Supper, weddings, funerals, teaching, hiring, and caring for those caught in sin. If you are a leader who is facing any of these challenging issues and decisions, then this practical, grace-filled book is for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does all knowledge of God come through Christ alone, or can human beings discover truths about God philosophically? The Analogy of Being assembles essays by expert Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox theologians to examine the relationship between divine revelation in the person of Jesus Christ and the philosophical capacities of natural reason. These essays were inspired by the lively, decades-long debate between Karl Barth and Erich Przywara, which was first sparked in 1932 when Barth wrote that the use of natural theology in Roman Catholic thinking was the invention of the Antichrist. The contributors to The Analogy of Being analyze and reflect on both sides of Barth and Przywara s spirited discourse, offering diverse responses to a controversy reaching to the very core of Christian faith and theology. It would be difficult to match the range and quality of commentators on this historic exchange between a Catholic philosopher and a renowned Reformed theologian on a subject of enduring significance, given the centrality of analogy to any issue in philosophical theology. Moreover, the contributions exhibit how the issues have come to span ecclesial boundaries as their import has progressively evolved. A splendid collection! David Burrell, C.S.C. Uganda Martyrs University A profound testimony to the enduring significance of the analogia entis debate between Erich Przywara and Karl Barth. Hans Boersma Regent College In a fresh ecumenical context, this extraordinary volume rekindles the mid-twentieth-century encounter between ressourcement thinkers and metaphysical theology. The voices of Przywara, Barth, Balthasar, and others speak anew through leading theologians of our own day in these masterfully orchestrated essays. Matthew Levering University of Dayton
