Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses media conglomerates owning multiple media holdings under centralized ownership within and across media markets. It argues that Asian capitalists utilize both a market-oriented ideology and family connections to build their media empires, thereby creating cultural conglomerates that exercise corporate censorship over media markets. It focuses on family-controlled media conglomerates in Korea, specifically the international business giant, Samsung, and its related media companies, Cheil Jedang and JoongAng Ilbo, all of which are controlled by the single Lee family. Utilizing the theoretical approach of political economy of communication, the book examines how and why the Lee family exercise corporate censorship over Korean society. Offering an essential take on Asia’s political economy of communication in order to understand the workings of Asian media empires, this book will appeal to students and scholars of Korean Studies, Korean Business and Mass Communications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The typical view of Korean women is not as managers. The stereotype is of Korean women serving and pleasing men, or more recently as aggressive shopkeepers and bar-owners. Very little has been written to challenge this misconception. This fascinating book reveals there have always been managers amongst Korean women, particularly in occupations like money lending, retail and fashion, and women continue to serve after the economic crash at the beginning of a new century. Korean Women Managers and Corporate Culture illuminates the many roles of women - from management, leadership and policy making, to the more traditional positions as homemaker and wife – and describes the distinctive Korean corporate culture and economy in order to evaluate the future of women as well as that of Korea itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers readers a comprehensive and in-depth legal analysis of corporate social responsibility (CSR) by examining the theoretical foundations of corporate governance and its legal mechanism in the United States and South Korea. Moreover, it proposes legislative blueprint for establishing the legal frameworks that might serve to legitimize and effectively implement CSR in general. Reflecting the zeitgeist of improved corporate accountability and transparency, the ongoing movement to enhance CSR has permeated entire sectors of society the world over. Despite the apparent ubiquity of CSR, the corporate laws of many countries remain relatively silent on the issue, omitting to include any explicit provision governing the concept. Partly in response to this lack of legislation, Korean corporate scholars, for example, have attempted to introduce American legal theories, systems and laws on CSR into Korea. Yet traditional Korean jurisprudence provides no defining foundation for CSR; indeed, the prevailing view in jurisprudence and scholarship passively resists instituting corporate responsibility into the law. In response to this jurisprudential and academic shortcoming, and as an example for other countries, this book provides a comprehensive guide to the relevant legislation and theory on CSR in Korean corporate law by employing a comparative study of the relevant American theories and laws. Proceeding from this analysis, the book then puts forward a legislative blueprint for establishing a foundation to legitimize and effectively implement CSR.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Tinkerbell is finally in with The Lost Boys. Seriously, she's the new lead singer for their band. But the guitarist she's crushing on only sees her as a cute little mascot. And the guy who's crushing on her? She doesn't see him at all. I blame my car. If the stupid old clunker hadn't broken down, I would have had time to go home and change before auditioning for lead singer of my crush's band. Instead, I showed up in a Tinkerbell costume. Awesome. Now I'm not so much the hot rocker chick as I am that weird fairy girl, but whatever. I mean, I got the gig, that's what counts. And I owe it all to Maverick. If the newest member of the Princess Troupe hadn't stopped and played a real life prince by rescuing me and giving me a ride, I never would have gotten to the audition at all. Maverick even goes so far as to stick around and give me a ride home afterward, which is really going above and beyond for a new work friend. But when he tries to kiss me at the end of the night? Friends, we've officially entered never-never land. This can't be real. We live in two different worlds. Someone needs to tell Maverick that star football players don't go for girls like me. He says he's cool with being friends first, so yeah...okay. Friends I can do. Besides, it looks like I'm gonna need all the friends I can get as I prove to my new band that I'm not some kid who likes to play dress up. I'm a grown up. Mostly. Just...don't challenge me to a game of Never Have I Ever.

Book excerpt: This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. The challenge of rapid climate change is forcing us to rethink traditional attitudes to nature. This book is the first study to chart these changing attitudes in 21st-century British fiction. Climate Crisis and the 21st-Century British Novel examines twelve works that reflect growing cultural awareness of climate crisis and participate in the reshaping of the stories that surround it. Central to this renegotiation are four narratives: environmental collapse, pastoral, urban and polar. Bringing ecocriticism into dialogue with narratology and a new body of contemporary writing, Astrid Bracke explores a wide range of texts, from Zadie Smith's NW through Sarah Hall's The Carhullan Army and David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas to the work of a new generation of novelists such as Melissa Harrison and Ross Raisin. As the book shows, post-millennial fictions provide the imaginative space in which to rethink the stories we tell about ourselves and the natural world in a time of crisis.
