Book excerpt: Forget everything you think you know about faeries. . . . Creatures full of magic and whimsy? Not in the Oakenwyld. Not anymore. Deep inside the great Oak lies a dying faery realm, bursting with secrets instead of magic. Long ago the faeries mysteriously lost their magic. Robbed of their powers, they have become selfish and dull-witted. Now their numbers are dwindling and their very survival is at stake. Only one young faery—Knife—is determined to find out where her people's magic has gone and try to get it back. Unlike her sisters, Knife is fierce and independent. She's not afraid of anything—not the vicious crows, the strict Faery Queen, or the fascinating humans living nearby. But when Knife disobeys the Faery Queen and befriends a human named Paul, her quest becomes more dangerous than she realizes. Can Knife trust Paul to help, or has she brought the faeries even closer to the brink of destruction? Talented newcomer R. J. Anderson creates an extraordinary new fantasy world and weaves a gripping tale of lost magic, high adventure, and surprising friendship in which the fate of an entire realm rests on the shoulders of one brave faery rebel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bundle contains the complete Half Fae Hunter Series from books one to four. Dark Moon Rising: Jake Everett hunts monsters for a living and he’s very good at his job. While his mother was human, his father is a full blood Unseelie fairy. Unfortunately, that’s the bad kind of fairy, not the good kind. They aren’t exactly known as champions of justice in the fae realms. After leaving his old team of human hunters behind, he ends up in his hometown of Devil’s Peak. Almost from the first moment that he arrives, he learns he isn’t the only supernatural creature in town. A monster is on the loose and it is his duty to put a stop to it. Jake won’t be alone during this mission. His faithful sidekick, Rudy the leprechaun, will join him on his hunt. His new team will have skills and talents that will come in very handy when dealing with the new types of creatures that keep cropping up. As a twist, he won’t be the only one on the team who isn’t a full human for once. Deadly Seduction: Jake and his new team’s next mission will take them to a town called Paradise. All is not heavenly within the boundaries of the town. Strange creatures are plaguing the humans and it is their job to figure out what they are and how to get rid of them. They enlist the help of a clever young Archivist. With Brandon Cooper’s database of information, they can narrow down the monsters they’ll be facing. Unfortunately, he has to report their visit to his boss, the new Master Archivist. Jake hasn’t met Sheridan Harwood yet and his instincts tell him to avoid her at all costs. They encounter one of the Supernatural Crime Units that have been created to deal with non-human entities. Jake and his team won’t always be able to handle the monsters they’ll be facing alone. While he isn’t happy about the idea of working with the SCU, he might not have a choice. He knows where this job will ultimately take him; back to the fae realms where both danger and delight await him. Dungeon Trials: Hunting elemental monsters that have appeared in Texas, Jake and his team finally discover where they’re coming from. Someone is altering the portals that normally lead to the fae realms to allow creatures to come through from other worlds. They suspect the Dark Prince is behind it, but they don’t know how he’s achieving it. Jake receives a surprise visitor from the Seelie Court. The delectable Emelia gives him a magical invitation from her rulers. He knows he’ll have to open it eventually, but doing so will embroil him deeper in his quest. He’ll have to answer their imperial summons when he’s finished with his current mission. The Hunter Elite join Jake and his team on a job to take down some particularly nasty monsters, then Jake has no choice but to head to the fae realms. Once he has the gem that will allow him to close the dragon portal for good, he will be captured by Prince Sindarian. What happens after that wasn’t covered in the prophecy, but he doubts that whatever the ruler of the Unseelie realm has planned for him will be pleasant. Dragon Pledge: Jake is trapped in the goblin dungeon with no way out. He’s succumbed to the darkness inside him just as the Seer had told him, but he is no closer to finding a way out. Once he finally breaks free of the labyrinth, he has two enemies to kill. The Dark Prince’s days are numbered, even if he doesn’t realize it yet. The team that he left behind is facing their own problems. Asha has been taken and they don’t know where she is. They’ll have to rely on a mysterious warrior from the Seelie realm to come to their aid in order to free her. Sheridan Harwood is gaining the power to evict or kill all supernatural creatures from this realm. She’s made deals with beings from other realms, but she has plans of her own. The new Master Archivist is just as dangerous as the old one and she intends to pick up right where he left off.

Download or read book Hunter and Habitat in the Central Kalahari Desert written by George B. Silberbauer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981-04-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana is a sand desert covered by scrub and thorn forest, dry and bitterly cold in winter and extremely hot in summer before the short wet season. The only kinds of vegetation surviving this climate are short-lived annuals and deciduous species that lie dormant in the dry season. In this inhospitable territory live the hunter-gatherer G/wi bushmen. George Silberbauer has lived and worked among the G/wi for over ten years. In Hunter and Habitat, he analyses the ways in which G/wi society and culture have been shaped by the rugged natural environment. The book provides a thorough analysis of G/wi society, describing their social, political, and economic organization, their living patterns, subsistence technology, and seasonal adaptations. In short, Hunter and Habitat describes and elucidates the foundation of G/wi society: the interrelationships of the bushmen, their sociocultural system, and their habitat.
Download or read book The Black Hunter written by Pierre Vidal-Naquet and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one can fail to admire the brilliance of the connections Vidal-Naquet suggests... Audacity has been characteristic of Vidal-Naquet's career from the start; it marked his activities as a historian engag in the political struggle; it is visible at work in every page of this book. -- Bernard Knox, from the Foreword The black hunter travels through the mountains and forests of Greek mythology, living on the frontier of the city-state, of adulthood, of class, of ethics, of sexuality. Taking its title from this figure, The Black Hunter approaches the Greek world from its margins and charts the elaborate system of oppositions that pervaded Greek culture and society: cultivated and wild, citizen and foreigner, real and imaginary, god and man. Organizing his discussions around four principle themes -- space and time; youth and warriors; women, slaves, and artisans; and the city of vision and of reality -- Pierre Vidal-Naquet focuses on the congruence of the textual and the actual, on the patterns that link literary, philosophical, and historical works with such social activities as war, slavery, education, and commemoration. The Black Hunter probes the interplay of world view, language, and social practice to bring into dialogue that which does not naturally communicate according to the usual criteria of historical judgement. A brilliant demonstration of structural analysis and its usefulness in illuminating well-known texts and providing fresh insights... What strikes the reader of this book is its daring, innovative interpretations. This is not a book that merely collects new information or synthesizes old views. It bursts into the heart of important themes and floods them withbright light. -- Modern Greek Studies Yearbook One of the liveliest intellects in the field... There is a wealth of learning in this book; specialists... will wish to consult individual articles while the general reader will not only learn but enjoy its contents and tenor. -- Classical World Excellent... Vidal-Naquet's book is a gem. It will stimulate further thoughts, discussions and writings on the Greek politeia and politikon. It should be read by all those who are involved in classical and comparative studies. It puts into circulation a structuralist reading which is provocative and simultaneously rings true. -- V. Y. Mudimbe, Journal of Ritual Studies

Download or read book Minor Mlabri written by Jørgen Rischel and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The language described in this monograph is spoken by a small hilltribe in Northern Indochina. Its existence has attracted considerable attention because of the legendary and intriguing primitiveness of the Mlabri or 'Spirits of the Yellow Leaves', as they are traditionally called, but reliable information about the cultural heritage and particularly the language is sparse. This is true in particular of an ethnic subgroup whose culture and language are now close to extinction: the group is referred to as the 'Minor Mlabri'. This monograph is based on field notes from 1988 and later years in which the author visited the 'Minor-Mlabri'. The Mlabri are traditionally hunter-gatherers and seem to have been so for a long time. Until recently this was more or less the lifestyle of the small group under study here. They now associate with Hmongs in remote villages because they were for several years trapped in the war zone between Laos and Thailand and the few survivors of the 'Minor-Mlabri' had to settle down in safer environments. Deforestation has made it increasingly difficult for them to live their traditional life in the area where they belong. Up to now, the Mlabri language (in all its varieties) has been unknown.
