Given up for adoption thirty-six years ago, April Epner, now a quiet-living, sensible-jumper-wearing Latin teacher, has never had the slightest desire to be reunited with her biological mother. But, as it turns out, she doesn't have a choice. When Bernice Graverman, the brash, glamorous host of a mildly successful daytime TV talk show, flounces into her life claiming to be her mother, April is horrified: can she and this woman really share the same genes? Worse still, Bernice seems determined to take up her maternal role where she left off. Her first task: to tackle April's non-existent love life

Book excerpt: 'Affinity is the work of an intense and atmospheric imagination . . . Sarah Waters is such an interesting writer, a kind of feminist Dickens' Fiona Pitt-Kethley, Daily Telegraph Set in and around the women's prison at Milbank in the 1870s, Affinity is an eerie and utterly compelling ghost story, a complex and intriguing literary mystery and a poignant love story with an unexpected twist in the tale. Following the death of her father, Margaret Prior has decided to pursue some 'good work' with the lady criminals of one of London's most notorious gaols. Surrounded by prisoners, murderers and common thieves, Margaret feels herself drawn to one of the prisons more unlikely inmates - the imprisoned spiritualist - Selina Dawes. Sympathetic to the plight of this innocent-seeming girl, Margaret sees herself dispensing guidance and perhaps friendship on her visits, little expecting to find herself dabbling in a twilight world of seances, shadows, unruly spirits and unseemly passions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Genocide against the Tutsi, when up to one million Rwandan people were brutally killed, Rwanda has undergone a remarkable period of reconstruction. Driven by a governmental programme of unity and reconciliation, the last 25 years have seen significant changes at national, community, and individual levels. This book gathers previously unpublished testimonies from individuals who lived through the genocide. These are the voices of those who experienced one of the most horrific events of the 20th Century. Yet, their stories do not simply paint a picture of lives left destroyed and damaged; they also demonstrate healing relationships, personal growth, forgiveness and reconciliation. Through the lens of positive psychology, the book presents a range of perspectives on what happened in Rwanda in 1994, and shows how people have been changed by their experience of genocide.

Book excerpt: It was suggested to the author of this book of short stories that he relate his education accomplishments and high points in his life as it related to writing. Universities, and there were several, creative writing as far as those were available to an old student. He served four years active and four years reserve in the military. At fifty six he decided to graduate from high school. He had already been to three universities, learning Spanish, Russian, and Latin, and had taken a first course in creative writing. It was the first, of several rather unsteady steps, to a possible life of writing short stories. After graduating from high school he proceeded to move from one university creative writing course to another until he reached the university of N.C. at Chapel Hill with a professor, a well known writer, who taught advanced creative writing . It was required that a demonstration of writing ability needed to be offered before a student would be accepted to his class. MR. MacKay was accepted and presented many stories to the professor who was well taken with the creative talent demonstrated. It was the most positive acceptance by a professional writer and a compliment beyond any this writer had ever received. This is book #5 of a list of 8. Maybe he could be an accepted writer; that remains to be seen. Readers will make that judgment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As studio bosses, directors, and actors, Jews have been heavily involved in film history and vitally involved in all aspects of film production. Yet Jewish characters have been represented onscreen in stereotypical and disturbing ways, while Jews have also helped to produce some of the most troubling stereotypes of people of color in Hollywood film history. In Hollywood's Chosen People: The Jewish Experience in American Cinema, leading scholars consider the complex relationship between Jews and the film industry, as Jews have helped to construct Hollywood's vision of the American dream and American collective identity and have in turn been shaped by those representations. Editors Daniel Bernardi, Murray Pomerance, and Hava Tirosh-Samuelson introduce the volume with an overview of the history of Jews in American popular culture and the American film industry. Multidisciplinary contributors go on to discuss topics such as early Jewish films and directors, institutionalized anti-Semitism, Jewish identity and gossip culture, and issues of Jewish performance on film. Contributors draw on a diverse sampling of films, from representations of the Holocaust on film to screen comedy; filmmakers and writers, including David Mamet, George Cukor, Sidney Lumet, Edward Sloman, and Steven Spielberg; and stars, like Barbra Streisand, Adam Sandler, and Ben Stiller. The Jewish experience in American cinema reveals much about the degree to which Jews have been integrated into and contribute to the making of American popular film culture. Scholars of Jewish studies, film studies, American history, and American culture as well as anyone interested in film history will find this volume fascinating reading.
