Book excerpt: Mockery (Waters' ninth collection of humorous essays) was designed to mirror a stand up comedy act in terms of pacing and content with themes centering around the institution of marriage, the inescapable heredity of family and the aggravation of dealing with any and all human beings on a day to day basis. When read in the proper order, the book may cause a brain aneurysm. If read at random, Mockery may cause scurvy, flop sweats, excessive whiskey drinking, 'the vapors', permanent and irreparable agitation and terminal anti-social tendencies. Waters' has devoted his life to grumbling and moaning about whatever strikes him as funny while making others laugh at the same time. He often makes fun of others at their expense or resorts to being goofy when all else fails.

Book excerpt: Tall, Dark & Dangerous/SEAL Team Ten #12 New, never before published, full-length novel First published May 2018 Navy SEAL Lieutenant Jim “Spaceman” Slade’s got a problem. A SEAL Team is only as fast as its slowest member—and right now, thanks to his battered knees—that’s Jim. He reluctantly takes medical leave, but he’s a SEAL, so he spends his “vacation” as an instructor, helping out a former Senior Chief who runs a camp for SEAL wannabes. But to Jim’s shock, he finds himself falling for the one woman attending the camp session—an obviously brilliant but seemingly timid lawyer who is determined to do everything her way, no matter how wrong. Ashley DeWitt’s got a problem, too. She’s a kickass lawyer, but when it comes to her personal life, she’s a total pushover. When she finds herself hiding behind her condo Dumpster to avoid a confrontation with an ex, she decides enough is enough and signs up for a session at a camp called SEAL World, in hopes she’ll discover how to be more assertive outside of the courtroom. And then she’s assigned to Jim’s team... When an alpha male—smart, funny, strong, but terrified of a future trapped behind a desk—collides with a smart, funny, and quietly strong woman with a troubled past, sparks fly hot and fast. The tall, dark, and dangerous Navy SEALs of Team Ten are back, with reader favorites like Lucky, Joe Cat, Bobby Taylor and his wife Colleen, Thomas King, Rio Rosetti—and with Suzanne Brockmann’s signature blend of love, laughter, and a hint of danger in SEAL Camp. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Feeling of Wrongness, Joseph Packer and Ethan Stoneman confront the rhetorical challenge inherent in the concept of pessimism by analyzing how it is represented in an eclectic range of texts on the fringes of popular culture, from adult animated cartoons to speculative fiction. Packer and Stoneman explore how narratives such as True Detective, Rick and Morty, Final Fantasy VII, Lovecraftian weird fiction, and the pop ideology of transhumanism are better suited to communicate pessimistic affect to their fans than most carefully argued philosophical treatises and polemics. They show how these popular nondiscursive texts successfully circumvent the typical defenses against pessimism identified by Peter Wessel Zapffe as distraction, isolation, anchoring, and sublimation. They twist genres, upend common tropes, and disturb conventional narrative structures in a way that catches their audience off guard, resulting in belief without cognition, a more rhetorically effective form of pessimism than philosophical pessimism. While philosophers and polemicists argue for pessimism in accord with the inherently optimistic structures of expressive thought or rhetoric, Packer and Stoneman show how popular texts are able to communicate their pessimism in ways that are paradoxically freed from the restrictive tools of optimism. A Feeling of Wrongness thus presents uncharted rhetorical possibilities for narrative, making visible the rhetorical efficacy of alternate ways and means of persuasion.

Book excerpt: From the winner of the Hugo, Nebula and World Fantasy Awards, the epic third volume of the Dandelion Dynasties series, named by Time as one of the Greatest Fantasy Books of All Time, continues. Princess Théra, once known as Empress Üna of Dara, yielded the throne to her younger brother in order to journey to Ukyu-Gondé to war with the Lyucu, and has crossed the impenetrable Wall of Storms with a fleet of ships and ten thousand people. Constantly facing adversity, she faces new challenges by doing the most interesting thing and not letting the past dictate the present. In Dara, the Lyucu leadership bristles with rivalries, as power and perspectives change between the remains of the Dandelion courts. Here, mothers and daughters, Empress and Pékyu alike, nurture the seeds of plans that will take years to bloom. As the conquerors and the conquered jockey for position in these new regimes, tradition gives way to new justifications for power. Ken Liu returns to the series that has helped bridge the great epics of our history from the Aeneid to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms into a series that is unsurpassed in its depth of scope and adventure. 'Beyond ambitious in scope... You are swept into a world of political intrigue, hopeless sieges and compelling characters. Liu seamlessly blends philosophy and politics with tense battles and compelling action... Sad, funny, poignant and addictive, this book will leave a lasting impression on the genre' SFX

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once a hard-throwing Major League pitching prospect, thirty-year-old Jim Miller, aka Buckethead, has overcome three devastating knee injuries to get one final shot in pro ball in the Class "AAA" North American League, and over the course of the 1995 season, a baseball old-timer shows him a way to keep his career viable--by egregiously cheating--which could get him banished from the sport permanently. For the reader who wants to experience a wacky, yet absolutely authentic, look at pro ball from inside the clubhouse to out on the field to anywhere else ballplayers might go, the novel CLUBHOUSE CONFESSIONS delivers with an unadulterated season long narrative of the highs, the lows, and the wild and hysterical laughter emanating from the various ballparks, planes, buses, restaurants, bars, and hotels of the Tacoma Loggers, a club contending for the '95 Class "AAA" North American League title. Over the course of the 144 games season, the Loggers schedule takes them from Tacoma to Tucson and Vegas to Vancouver, and along the way, Miller and Sam Stone, his catcher and roommate, perfect their relationship to brotherhood status while Miller frantically tries to stave off the immanent day of reckoning for his playing career--his impending release and forced retirement by Tacoma's big league parent club. But on the night of the rained out home opener, Miller's chance meeting with a high school history teacher ultimately transforms him from a dour woman-hater to a man who comes to discover just how astonishing life can be, even without baseball. CLUBHOUSE CONFESSIONS will put you in the dugout, the bullpen, on the mound, and in the clubhouse alongside twenty-three Logger players, and will finally allow the whole world to hear what actually goes on in those crazy arguments with the umpires and what takes place at the bottom of a stack of players during a bench-clearing brawl. And hey?the ending might just surprise you, so don't you dare peek!

Book excerpt: What happens when your life is a rom-com . . . but you don’t even believe in true love? Chloe Sanderson is an optimist, and not because her life is easy. As the sole caregiver for her father, who has early-onset Alzheimer’s, she’s pretty much responsible for everything. She has no time—or interest—in getting swept up in some dazzling romance. Not like her best friend, Annie, who literally wrote a rom-com that’s about to premiere in theaters across America . . . and happens to be inspired by Chloe and her cute but no-nonsense boss, Nick Velez. As the buzz for the movie grows, Chloe reads one too many listicles about why Nick is the perfect man, and now she can’t see him as anything but Reason #4: The scruffy-bearded hunk who’s always there when you need him. But unlike the romance Annie has written for them, Chloe isn’t so sure her own story will end in a happily-ever-after.

Book excerpt: On June 29, 1978, Bob Crane, known to Hogan's Heroes fans as Colonel Hogan, was discovered brutally murdered in his Scottsdale, Arizona, apartment. His eldest son, Robert Crane, was called to the crime scene. In this poignant memoir, Robert Crane discusses that terrible day and how he has lived with the unsolved murder of his father. But this storyline is just one thread in his tale of growing up in Los Angeles, his struggles to reconcile the good and sordid sides of his celebrity father, and his own fascinating life. Crane began his career writing for Oui magazine and spent many years interviewing celebrities for Playboy -- stars such as Chevy Chase, Bruce Dern, Joan Rivers, and even Koko the signing gorilla. As a result of a raucous encounter with the cast of Canada's SCTV, he found himself shelving his notepad and tape recorder to enter the employ of John Candy -- first as an on-again, off-again publicist; then as a full-time assistant, confidant, screenwriter, and producer; and finally as one of Candy's pallbearers. Through disappointment, loss, and heartbreak, Crane's humor and perseverance shine. Beyond the big stars and behind-the-scenes revelations, this riveting account of death, survival, and renewal in the shadow of the Hollywood sign makes a profound statement about the desire for love and permanence in a life where those things continually slip away. By turns shocking and uplifting, Crane is an unforgettable and deeply human story.
